null Prior Experience Guidance For Contract Instructors/Check Airmen Issued

The FAA requires an instructor or check airman used by an air carrier to have completed the initial training program of an air carrier at some point. For a contract instructor or check airman providing services to a Part 135 operator, that prior training must have been for a Part 135 air carrier.

Although many of the instructors and check airmen at Part 142 training centers have this prior experience, they may no longer have (or be able to acquire) the initial training records required by the FAA.

In new guidance, issued in Notice 8900.208, the FAA established an alternate means for those unable to produce the original records to attest and document the prior training.

Any instructor or check airman who is unable to produce the complete training records may complete an affidavit affirming the training did occur and provide other evidence to support that assertion. This evidence could include “completed check ride forms, available training records, logbook entries and other records attesting to flight operation participation, associated pay stubs, W-2 forms (financially confidential information redacted), tax returns, a statement from a current or former employee of the air carrier or program manager, and other proofs of employment,” according to the notice.

Operators nominating instructors or check airmen via this method must submit a separate affidavit to their FAA inspector when submitting their request. NATA encourages operators utilizing contract instructors and check airmen to review the new guidance.

nullNATA State Advocacy Network Aims To Protect Member Interests At The State And Local Levels

NATA’s State Advocacy Network (SAN) is an effort that aims to increase awareness of state and local issues among the general industry and highlights ongoing state legislation, events and opportunities for NATA members to raise issues or pose questions or concerns for association and industry assistance.

As you know, a host of issues including airport and land use, security, taxation, aircraft noise and emissions, and other priorities that arise confront aviation businesses daily. Volunteers of the network will play an important role in the association’s efforts to stimulate and encourage greater involvement among its members with the goal being to build a strong network to defeat unwarranted policies. The network’s website is a platform to gain awareness and support for issues facing members and their businesses, and it provides news and updates on ongoing state legislation.

null2013 Air Charter Safety Symposium Begins Tomorrow

The 2013 Air Charter Safety Symposium begins tomorrow at the NTSB Training Center in Ashburn, Virginia. The ACSF Symposium is the annual gathering of the air charter industry where current and emerging safety challenges are investigated. Topics covered at this year’s symposium included safety leadership, critical incident response training, upset prevention and recovery, an Aviation Safety Action Program (ASAP) panel, and an update from the FAA.

Attendees can register on-site for the symposium. Registration is $495 for ACSF members and $650 for non-members. Registration includes admittance to the Air Charter Safety Symposium both days and all scheduled group meal, breaks, and social functions. Transportation to and from the hotel to the symposium events is also included.

Two-Day Seminar Scheduled for March 11 & 12 in Las Vegas

NATA’s acclaimed FBO Success Seminar series heads to Las Vegas, Nevada, on March 11 and 12 as part of the association’s Spring Training Week.

Developed for FBO owners, operators, managers and financial personnel, this seminar focuses on maximizing profits, reducing expenses and improving FBO productivity and bottom-line performance.

This is the fifth year NATA will offer the FBO Success Seminar, and FBO industry veterans John Enticknap and Ron Jackson, principals of Aviation Business Strategies Group, will again facilitate the seminar.

In addition to the 10 sessions addressing financial, operational and customer service productivity, the seminar places an emphasis on networking with other FBOs and learning first-hand various best practices through lively roundtable discussions.

nullNATA Safety 1st Visits South Carolina

Last week, NATA Safety 1st hosted an Aviation Fuel Handling and Quality Control Workshop during the South Carolina Aviation Association Annual Conference in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. Conference attendees received education on the latest fuel handling and fuel quality procedures, information on record keeping requirements and information on the latest 6th edition fuel filter monitor elements. NATA Director of Safety and Training Michael France led the workshop, and it featured industry experts; Jim Gammon, President of Gammon Technical Products, Reed Fuller of Ascent Aviation and Rick McKenna from Velcon.

NATA’s Safety 1st program will host its annual Spring Training in Las Vegas next month, featuring Line Service Supervisor Training, the Safety 1st Trainer seminar and the FBO Success Seminar.

The deadline to submit nominations for the NATA Industry Excellence Awards is Friday, March 1.

NATA annually recognizes individuals, offices, and organizations demonstrating excellence in their field and the highest level of customer service. If you know of a person or organization that has helped to improve the general aviation community, be sure to submit a nomination. The five categories are:

The Airport Executive Partnership Award recognizes an airport manager for outstanding efforts to nurture the relationships between aviation businesses and airport operators.

The Aviation Journalism Award identifies a journalist, writer, or publication that excels in consumer education or editorial support that is beneficial to the general aviation industry.

The Excellence In Pilot Training Award recognizes an individual or organization that has made outstanding contributions in safety, professionalism, leadership, and excellence in the field of pilot training.

The FAA Customer Service Excellence Award recognizes a Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) facility or facility staff member who represents the highest degree of customer service and elevates the quality of interaction between the FAA and aircraft maintenance and repair facilities, Part 135 certificate holders, airport service organizations, and flight schools.

The ATP/NATA General Aviation Service Technician Award acknowledges the exceptional performance of a licensed airframe and power plant mechanic or radio repairman who has practiced his or her craft for a period of 20 or more years.
