nullNTSB Acting Chairman Hart and FAA Deputy Administrator Whitaker Confirmed for Aviation Business Roundtable

NATA is pleased to announce that Acting NTSB Chairman Christopher Hart and Deputy FAA Administrator Michael G. Whitaker have been added to the Aviation Business Roundtable agenda. Hart and Whitaker join a lineup that also includes noted industry and political analysts Richard Aboulafia and Stuart Rothenberg.
In his role as FAA Deputy Administrator, Whitaker serves as the Chief NextGen Officer and is responsible for the development and implementation of FAA's Next Generation Air Transportation System. He is a seasoned aviation executive with extensive business, regulatory, legal, and international experience. Whitaker is also well versed in general and commercial aviation and has led collaborative efforts and joint ventures to promote aviation safety, enhanced performance and profitability, fostered alliances, and improved corporate governance.

Christopher A. Hart has served as Acting NTSB Chairman since April 26, 2014 and in July was nominated by the President to serve as Chairman of the NTSB. Hart's nomination was approved by the Senate Commerce Committee in September and is expected to be considered by the full Senate in November. Originally sworn in as a Board member in 2009, Hart joined the Board after a long career in transportation safety, including a previous term as a member of the NTSB. Immediately before returning to the Board in 2009, Mr. Hart was Deputy Director for Air Traffic Safety Oversight at the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). He was previously the FAA Assistant Administrator for System Safety.

nullNATA Requests Exemption of Landing Fees for Based Aircraft at MacArthur Airport

On Friday, NATA President and CEO Thomas L. Hendricks wrote to the Town of Islip, NY, requesting it drop recently imposed landing fees on based aircraft at Long Island MacArthur Airport. Hendricks also posed a series of questions to Islip officials in order to determine if an additional nighttime landing fee is consistent with the airport's grant assurance obligations. The Town of Islip imposed landing fees on all aircraft effective September 1, 2014, and for the first time made them applicable to based aircraft. In addition, the new fee schedule established even higher rates for night landings. Hendricks requested reconsideration of the new fees, noting the intended increase would likely lead to reduced business and investment and potential job loss at the airport. He also observed that the imposition of higher fees for nighttime operations appear to be a defacto attempt to curb traffic, which requires specific approval of the FAA.
