Hendricks Responds to Wall Street Journal Article on Air Traffic Control Privatization

Last week, NATA President and CEO Thomas L. Hendricks submitted a letter to the Editor of the Wall Street Journal in response to its April 27th article “The Air-Traffic System U.S. Airlines Wish They Had.” Countering the article’s allegations that NavCanada is the air traffic control system model to emulate in the United States, Hendricks reminds readers, “While corporatizing air traffic control may sound ideologically attractive to some, it’s also a disincentive for airlines to pursue modernization and operating efficiency and instead rely on cost shifting and exclusion of other aviation users from what they see as their airports and airways.” Hendricks also asserts, “The ability to repeatedly manage incredibly complex airspace safely, in multiple locations no less, without being required to give preference to certain users happens in only one place in the world – the United States.”

NATA and GA Community Praises FAA Part 23 Rulemaking and Urges Rule Completion in 2016

On the eve of an FAA public hearing on the Part 23 Notice of Proposed Rulemaking (NPRM), a coalition of leading general aviation organizations, including NATA, applauded the FAA’s efforts to improve safety and make it easier to bring new products to market for the light general aviation sector, while strongly encouraging the agency to finish its work on the issue by the end of 2016. The NPRM is a result of the Small Airplane Revitalization Act (SARA) that was signed into law on November 27, 2013. The groups recognized the FAA for its leadership, calling the Part 23 effort “a poster child for good rulemaking.” NATA President and CEO Thomas L. Hendricks added, “The FAA’s proposed rule recognizes that we live in an era of extraordinary innovation; its emphasis on performance-based standards will accelerate the availability of exciting new safety enhancing products to the aviation community. Just as important, performance-based standards will enhance regulatory clarity, assisting in efforts to increase regulatory consistency across the agency’s regions and offices.” Please click here to view full comments.

Phillips 66 Aviation Expands Contract Fuel Program

Phillips 66 Aviation recently expanded its contract fuel program, Partners-Into-Plane, to allow Part 91 corporate and all Part 135 charter operators to participate. It previously was available only to Part 121 and 125 operators, as well as Part 135 cargo, air ambulance and scheduled passenger operations. Building on its existing platform, the program does not require fuel releases or contract fuel cards for processing, which streamlines the process. Partners-Into-Plane is currently available at 200 FBOs in the U.S., and more than 300 members participate in the program, including major and regional passenger and cargo airlines, air ambulance, firefighting and other specialty operators. “In response to overwhelming feedback, we are making this program enhancement available to all flight operators,” said Phillips 66 Aviation manager for general aviation Greg Hart.
