NATA and Industry Coalition Urge Senate Passage of Bipartisan FAA Reauthorization Legislation

NATA, along with a strong coalition of associations ranging from general and commercial aviation to manufacturers and drone interests, sent a letter to Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) and Minority Leader Charles Schumer (D-NY) urging consideration of legislation providing long-term reauthorization for the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA).

“It is essential that the FAA is provided long-term authorization for its activities and programs to maintain and advance the safest, most efficient aerospace system in the world,” the groups note, while adding that long-term legislation will allow the support needed to continue to build, invest, hire, innovate and grow this dynamic industry. “The FAA’s success and that of the aviation system will be significantly enhanced by progress and passage” of the legislation, the letter concludes.

Last year, the Senate Commerce Committee passed the legislation and, in April, the House of Representatives passed its FAA reauthorization bill. Current funding authority for the agency expires September 30th.

NATA Urges Funding for WWII Commemorative Program in DOD Appropriations Bill

Last week, NATA and 17 other aviation and veteran support organizations sent a letter to Senate Appropriations leadership urging the adoption of an amendment in the Fiscal Year 2019 Department of Defense (DOD) appropriations bill that honors the sacrifices of World War II veterans and marks the 75th anniversary of several of the battles. This commemorative program focuses on “honoring these veterans, educating the public about the history of World War II, paying tribute to the contributions made on the home front by the people of the U.S. during the war, and recognizing the contributions and sacrifices made by our allies,” the letter states. Many educational components included in the program focus on aviation, including “the skills and sacrifices of pilots and mechanics, and the tremendous achievement in aircraft manufacturing during the war.”

The supportive groups conclude by stating that the program and its activities will seize public imagination, reflect on our nation’s ability to rally together to preserve our national interest, and “be a defining moment in remembering the historic significance of the sacrifices of our veterans and nation during World War II.”

On August 17th, the FAA issued the Board of County Commissioners (BOCC) of Adams County, Colorado an airport launch site operator license, called “Spaceport Colorado” at the Front Range Airport (FTG) in Watkins, Colorado. The FAA’s Office of Commercial Space Transportation states, “Under the Proposed Action, the FAA would issue a launch site operator license to the BOCC, which would authorize the BOCC to offer Spaceport Colorado to commercial launch providers to conduct launch operations of horizontal take-off and horizontal landing reusable launch vehicles (RLVs).” It is important to note that the Proposed Action does not include the approval of any launches as any future application for a launch license would be subjected to further environmental review. NATA’s Regulatory Affairs staff participate on the FAA’s Spaceport Categorization Aviation Rulemaking Committee. All Spaceport related inquiries can be sent to Megan Eisenstein (meisenstein@nata.aero) or Chris Baum (cbaum@nata.aero).

JetsPlus Joins the Air Charter Safety Foundation (ACSF)

Recently, the Air Charter Safety Foundation (ACSF) announced that JetsPlus is the newest charter operator to join the ACSF. Along with more than 175 other companies, JetsPlus now supports the ACSF vision to enable on-demand air charter providers, corporate flight departments and fractional program managers to achieve the highest levels of safety in the aviation industry. “The entire company is built around a top-down culture of safety that expects and encourages clear, open dialogue, empowering every team member to be an active contributor to the welfare of their passengers. We are delighted that they will be participating in the ACSF-ASAP program as well,” said ACSF President Bryan Burns. The ACSF has developed the industry audit standard, an all-inclusive audit tailored for Part 135 and 91K operators that acts as a detailed gap analysis of an operator’s management practices. The audit program consists of a thorough review of an operator’s processes, procedures and regulatory compliance and the operator’s implementation of, and adherence, to a safety management system.
