| NATA Welcomes Selection of Thune as Ranking Member on Senate Subcommittee on Aviation Operations, Safety and Security |
Yesterday, Senator Kay Bailey Hutchison (R-TX), Ranking Member of the Senate Committee on Commerce, Science and Transportation, announced new minority subcommittee ranking member assignments for the 112th Congress. Included in this announcement was the selection of Senator John Thune (R-SD) as the Ranking Member of the Subcommittee on Aviation Operations, Safety and Security.
“Senator Thune has long been a supporter of the general aviation industry,” stated NATA President James K. Coyne. “Starting during his time as a Member of the U.S. House of Representatives, NATA has worked closely with the Senator on a variety of issues affecting our membership and the industry at-large.”
Recently, Senator Thune introduced S. 785, the Freedom from Government Competition Act, to reduce unfair government competition with the private sector, including small businesses. NATA members have continuously experienced government competition in the form of airport operators competing with private business.
“Congress must recognize the right of private businesses to have the first option in providing services at airports, and should ensure that airport authorities seeking to provide these same services are not granted an unfair advantage due to their government status,” stated Coyne.
“NATA congratulates Senator Thune on his selection as Ranking Member and looks forward to continuing its long-standing relationship with the Senator in addressing issues important to America’s aviation businesses,” concluded Coyne.

| California SB 619 Placed on Consent Calendar |
Senate Bill 619 has been placed on the California Senate floor consent calendar. This is a procedural move that allows a group of bills that have no opposition to be passed as a group, rather than read, debated and voted on individually. If the Senate consent calendar is approved, it will mean that SB 619 leaves the Senate with no opposition.
SB 619 provides an exemption from the rules issued by the California Bureau of Private Postsecondary Education (BPPE) for flight instructors and flight training facilities that:
- Do not require the upfront payment of “tuition” or fees, and
- Do not require students to enter into a contract of indebtedness
SB 619 would, however, still allow students to purchase “block time” in amounts less than $2,500 from their flight school. NATA will continue its efforts to ensure that relief is passed by the legislature before the July 1, 2011 date on which the BPPE rules become effective for our industry.
NATA is currently engaged in lobbying effort in Sacramento as well as ongoing grassroots efforts around the state of California. NATA has established a fund for its members and others in the industry to contribute towards some of the cost of this effort. For more information, please click the link below.
