Environmental Committee

NATA established its Environmental Committee earlier this year to develop programs designed to assist member companies in minimizing their impact on the environment. The programs outlined below compose the early stages of the NATA Clear Skies Initiative:

NATA Clear Skies Program:
While private aviation contributes a statistically insignificant amount to greenhouse gas emissions, ground operators, aircraft operators and their passengers may feel a responsibility to compensate for some or all of the carbon emitted during their ground operations/flights.

NATA is proposing a voluntary, simple and flexible program to allow interested parties to donate to a variety of environmental causes based on their carbon emissions.

NATA will create a portfolio of organizations and programs that will receive funds from participant contributions. NATA’s Environmental Committee will decide which organizations should be included in the Clear Skies Program. These organizations and programs will include a variety of options that the committee believes will address the environmental concerns of NATA members. These might include:

  •   Carbon offset programs
  •   Aviation-specific research programs
  •   Educational outreach programs to train those in the aviation community how to address environmental issues best.

    Best Management Practices:
NATA encourages its member companies to meet proper environmental compliance standards including a Spill Prevention Control and Countermeasure (SPCC) plan, if fuel is stored above ground in tankers. The association is currently undertaking the development of best management practices that will allow aviation businesses to capitalize on becoming more energy efficient while minimizing their company’s impact on the environment. To date, NATA has crafted best management practices for the following topics:
    NATA Environmental Compliance Checklist:
The NATA has developed this Environmental Compliance Checklist to assist members to achieve proper compliance with federal environmental rules and regulations.  This checklist was developed based on U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) regulations.   Many states have additional requirements, so each facility should check their own state regulations.   This checklist is intended to assist facilities with compliance with the most common environmental rules affecting aviation facilities and is not intended to be an extensive review of all environmental regulations.

    Public Relations Campaign:
NATA is currently developing a public relations campaign to provide the facts about aviation’s impact on the environment and what its members are doing to ensure the protection of the world’s environment.  Below are items free for members to download and use as appropriate.
