FAA Announces Largest Reorganization in Agency History

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has launched the largest organizational restructuring in its 67-year history, consolidating key functions and creating new offices focused on safety, modernization, and advanced aviation technologies. The reorganization coincides with the relocation of Washington-area FAA employees to the Department of Transportation’s headquarters at Navy Yard and, according to FAA, the restructuring will not result in reductions in force.

The changes place finance, information technology, and human resources under the direct oversight of FAA Administrator Bryan Bedford and establish new offices dedicated to Safety Management Systems and advanced aviation technology, including drones and air taxis. A separate modernization office, required by the 2024 FAA Reauthorization Act, will oversee the multibillion-dollar effort to upgrade the nation’s aging air traffic control infrastructure.

“NATA welcomes efforts to strengthen safety oversight and modernize the FAA’s internal structure,” said NATA President and CEO Curt Castagna. “As these changes move forward and the industry continues to evolve, it will be important to ensure continued coordination with industry and maintain a clear focus on efficient implementation, workforce stability, and the needs of operators, airports, and the broader aviation community. NATA and its members look forward to continuing those collaborative efforts.”
