Last Thursday, the FAA announced its latest request for proposals to modernize the air traffic control (ATC) system via a single, state-of-the-art platform to “revolutionize how air traffic controllers receive flight data and move aircraft between facilities.” The Common Automation Platform (CAP) would increase controller adaptability and efficiency by unifying the current En Route Automation Modernization (ERAM) and Standard Terminal Automation Replacement System (STARS) systems used to track and control aircraft. In an increasingly complex airspace system, the CAP will increase safety and reduce delays, according to FAA Administrator Bryan Bedford.
This latest Request for Information (RFI) builds on earlier RFIs for a runway safety lighting system and vendor challenge to modernize the air traffic flow system. The Agency expects to announce a Prime Integrator to manage the building of the new system in the coming weeks.
