The General Aviation Joint Safety Committee (GAJSC) has identified human biases, including hindsight bias, as important factors in aviation accidents.
Hindsight bias is the tendency to view past events as more predictable after the outcome is known. In aviation, this can lead pilots and safety professionals to oversimplify accident causes or assume warning signs were more obvious than they were at the time.
GAJSC encourages pilots to consider how similar scenarios could develop in their own operations by reviewing the environment, available information, pilot experience, and decision-making factors involved.
