Back NATA News / September 22, 2026

Following an audit required by the FAA Reauthorization Act of 2024, the Department of Transportation Office of Inspector General issued four recommendations to strengthen FAA’s safety workforce planning and reporting. The recommendations call for FAA to standardize agency-wide definitions for safety-critical and other positions, include all safety-critical employees in workforce reporting, provide stakeholders with information on senior-position gaps, vacancy periods, and relevant workload data, and track milestones and performance metrics for its Workforce Evolution program and updated aviation safety staffing models. FAA concurred with all four recommendations and plans to implement them by September 30, 2027.
