2025 Shutdown: Second Longest in U.S. History

Back NATA News / October 28, 2025

The current government shutdown now ranks as the second longest in U.S. history, with 28 days of lapsed funding, mounting pressure on federal employees at the frontlines of safety and security, and increasing effects on aviation businesses.

Air traffic controllers, TSA security screeners, and CBP officers have now missed their first full paychecks, creating unnecessary stressors for those charged with safeguarding our aviation system. In addition, funding for air traffic controller training at the FAA Academy is set to expire this week, threatening to disrupt recent progress on the national controller shortage. Meanwhile, FAA furloughs are causing costly delays for NATA members seeking certification, pilot check, aircraft conformity, and other FAA services.

NATA urges Washington leaders to set aside differences and prioritize funding for our National Airspace System and the federal employees whose work enables our industry to safely provide essential services and drive critical economic growth. To assist NATA’s advocacy efforts to end the government shutdown, please share any effect the shutdown has on your business or operations with VP of Regulatory Affairs Jenny Ann Urban at jurban@nata.aero.
