FAA SAFO Reminds Operators to Address Lithium Battery Risks

Back NATA News / September 16, 2025

The FAA has released Safety Alert for Operators (SAFO) 25002, reminding operators of the ongoing fire risks associated with lithium batteries and urging proactive steps to mitigate hazards.

SAFO 25002 emphasizes the importance of operators ensuring they follow safety risk management procedures to evaluate the hazards of batteries carried by passengers and crew, particularly those that might not be visible or easily accessible. Operators are encouraged to focus all passenger messaging on awareness of risks, proper battery storage while on the aircraft, and actions in response to signs of overheating.

Additionally, operators should review their lithium battery firefighting process, procedures, and training, as well as the SAFO in its entirety for additional information on lithium battery concerns.
