NATA Supports Joint Aviation Community Comments on FAA Radio Altimeter NPRM

Back NATA News / March 10, 2026

NATA, as part of the Joint Aviation Community (JAC), submitted comments on the FAA’s proposed rule for interference-tolerant radio altimeter systems, calling for a final approach that protects safety and reflects operational realities.

The filing supports key elements of the proposal, including a 35-foot separation distance for certain outdoor wireless base station equipment and a 6 dB safety margin for compliance, while emphasizing that the final rule must safeguard the full range of aircraft systems and operations that depend on radio altimeters.

NATA and the JAC urged the FAA and FCC to remain aligned on a final framework that reflects retrofit costs, certification and installation timelines, and aircraft downtime, without imposing unnecessary operational and financial burdens.
