Congress Avoids Government Shutdown, Preserves FAA Authority

Back NATA News / September 30, 2023

Today, Congress averted a government shutdown and lapse of FAA authority by passing H.R. 5860, which provides 45 days of temporary government funding at existing levels and a 3-month extension of current FAA authorization. NATA lobbied in favor of an FAA extension to provide Congress necessary time to complete comprehensive FAA reauthorization legislation while maintaining stability for both the Agency and the aviation industry.

After a series of failed attempts throughout the week, on Saturday afternoon the House voted 335-91 on a simplified continuing resolution similar to a measure under Senate consideration, but without the funding for Ukraine that many Senators favored. After several hours of closed-door deliberations, the Senate approved the House measure 88-9 in time to send it to the President’s desk before the midnight deadline.

NATA thanks its members who contacted their elected officials in favor of an FAA extension. The Association also expresses sincere thanks to bipartisan leaders who worked to protect the Agency’s Congressional authorization, avoiding detrimental effects to the safety, security, and success of our vital industry.
