Airline Services Council Meeting Concludes Today
Hot Topics: Ground Handling Entities Becoming Regulated By The Federal Government And IATA Standard Ground Handling Agreement
|
The NATA Airline Services Council has been meeting over the last two days in Herndon, Virginia, to discuss two critical topics affecting the ground handling community: whether ground handling companies should become regulated by the federal government and revisions to the IATA standard ground handling agreement. This special meeting comes as a result of discussions during the May 16-17, 2011 meeting where attendees highlighted some of the potential benefits of ground handlers becoming regulated parties under the Transportation Security Administration and the Federal Aviation Administration.
Minutes from this week’s meeting, along with all other information on the NATA Airline Services Council, can be found at: http://www.nata.aero/Committees/Airline-Services-Council.aspx

Chairman’s Message -- Handling Emergencies |
Do you like the movies? I think you can learn a lot from the really good ones. Take for example “Twelve O’clock High” with Gregory Peck as Brig. Gen. Savage. It’s a great study in leadership. So much so, that we show the movie and discuss it at all of our supervisor and manager training sessions.
In the movie, Gen. Savage has been sent in to take over a bomb wing in England early in World War II. The bomb wing has become known as the Hard Luck Group because of a series of misfortunes. Gen Savage, rather than coddling them, takes a firm hand, gets them back to basics, and turns the unit around. You can really learn a lot about leadership from watching the movie.
Another one of my favorites is “Braveheart” with Mel Gibson as William Wallace. Wallace was the rebel that brought the Scots together to fight against an oppressive English king. If you go to Edinburgh Castle in Scotland today, the only real memento of Wallace is a small stained glass window high up on one wall. One of the best lines from the movie is when Wallace is trying to steady his meager force against a superior English army by telling them it’s a chance to stand-up to tyranny. The Scots do, and they win!
In Hollywood, smaller forces and even lone individuals are often the victors when they stand up to overwhelming force, but can it be done in real life? Some will say no and just go with the flow. A few will realize that part of the American dream is that every individual counts, but we need to stand up if we’re going to be counted.
The country’s economy is in dire straits. Denigrating general aviation isn’t going to make it better. As businesses, we need to come together and be counted. That happens within the NATA.
NATA Airline Services Council member companies employ over 90,000 employees and have a combined revenue of over $5 billion. If you add in all of the FBOs, this becomes a sizeable potential voting block in the U.S. But to be heard, we have to come together. To paraphrase William Wallace, one man standing alongside a whole host of his countrymen can make a difference.
Let your politicians know that the aviation industry is a significant driver of the U.S. economy and “blaming” corporate jets will not make it better.

NATA’s E-Learn Summer Fuel QC Webinar Series Featured Walter Chartrand and Frank Clark NATA’s Quality Control (QC) webinar was well received by more than 15 FBO locations attending to hear Walter Chartrand, Air BP Aviation, and Frank Clark, Facet International, discuss “If you didn’t write it down, did you actually do it” and “contaminants in fuel and how to detect them.” Chartrand stressed that when you perform your QC checks you must write them down. Otherwise, how can you prove you did them? Chartrand also had sage advice on the use of wing decals, nozzles, and forms/online recordkeeping as well as the key to maintaining a sharp QC attitude. Clark covered the leading causes of contamination and what your operation can do to prevent or stop future occurrences.
Attendees posed many pertinent questions such as, When is the best time to sump tanks? and Our hydrant carts were contaminated by surfactants but our fuel trucks were not (loaded from rack off same fuel system); what are the suspected causes for the contamination? Additional questions were asked by attendees and may be reviewed on the recorded webinar.
There’s still time to join the last two QC webinars in August. Take advantage of valuable industry advice and ask pertinent questions during the live webinars August 3 and 17.

Support Congressional Candidates Essential To Airline Services Companies Join NATAPAC Today! |
In the past, NATA has successfully contributed to Members of Congress who have proven their leadership in supporting general aviation. NATAPAC supports the congressional campaigns of Members of Congress who look out for the interests of aviation businesses, regardless of party affiliation. With political fundraising and campaign activity at an all time high, we cannot afford to allow other interest groups to define the issues that will impact our members.
To stay informed about NATAPAC, fill out the authorization form located in the NATAPAC brochure today. NATA must ask for permission to solicit its members, as required by law. Because NATA is a not-for-profit 501(c)(6) organization, we must obtain written approval from NATA’s member companies before soliciting contributions for NATAPAC.
