The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) is moving toward a 2027 auction of mid-band wireless spectrum to support next-generation wireless services, including 5G. The spectrum is currently used by aircraft radio altimeters, making equipment compatibility a key concern.
According to Reuters, the FCC will vote July 22 on an order to auction 160 megahertz of Upper C-Band spectrum next year. The spectrum, located in the 3.98–4.2 GHz band, would be made available for terrestrial wireless flexible use in the contiguous United States through competitive bidding. The agency said it expects the sale to raise billions of dollars.
Reuters reported that the FCC’s proposed rules include “retrofit rebates” to support the domestic aviation sector in upgrading altimeters to protect against potential 5G interference. NATA continues to collaborate with other trade associations and FCC officials to ensure business aviation is included in such rebates.
In its Report and Order, Order of Proposed Modification, and Order on Reconsideration, the FCC also addresses use of the 3.7–4.2 GHz band and the planned reconfiguration of the Upper C-Band.
