The FAA has proposed replacing the current inspection authorization with an inspection rating on a mechanic’s certificate, similar to airframe and powerplant ratings. Under the proposal, the inspection rating would carry the same privileges and limitations as the current IA but would not expire or require renewal every odd-numbered year.
For NATA members, the proposal could reduce administrative burden for mechanics and maintenance businesses, while shifting emphasis to tracking rolling recent experience and maintaining records independently. Members should review how the proposed changes may affect compliance processes, workforce planning, and inspection continuity.
Comments on the FAA proposal are due August 31, 2026.
