Concerns with approach path for runway 28R at Palm Beach International Airport (PBI) have been raised by multiple flight crews. NATA is alerting operators to these reports to increase awareness of the unique approach environment during Presidential TFRs. Two pilot safety reports regarding the PBI RNAV (GPS) X 28R approach were filed using NASA ASRS procedures. Both cases involved aircraft awaiting departure for runway 28R when another aircraft was on the RNAV approach. Due to PBI’s proximity to the TFR established around the President’s Florida home, the approach for runway 28R is offset approximately 30 degrees from the final approach course. As a result, approaching aircraft are less visible to aircraft on the ground, increasing the possibility of an incursion or other safety event. Operators and crews using PBI are encouraged to ensure pre-flight preparations include a review of the NASA alert bulletin. The Palm Beach airport also has a presentation on operations at the airport during TFRs available here.
