NATA Releases Updated Guide to Minimum Standards for Airport Sponsors and Aeronautical Businesses

Today, the National Air Transportation Association (NATA) released an updated “Guide to Minimum Standards for Airport Sponsors and Aeronautical Businesses.” The goal of this guidance is to inform public agencies and private owners of public-use airports and aeronautical businesses of the benefits of developing, implementing and enforcing airport minimum standards, as well as rules and regulations, and to provide key information and recommendations.

“NATA and its Airport Business Committee are pleased to provide our members with the most recent and relevant information to help them continue to be successful businesses in their communities,” said NATA’s Director of Regulatory Affairs, Megan Eisenstein. She added, “We encourage our airport and FBO members to use this guide as a resource, as minimum standards protect all users and customers at an airport and help promote a level playing field amongst airport tenants.”

NATA thanks the volunteers of NATA’s Airport Business Committee who reviewed the update of this guidance publication. To view the entire press release, please click here.

Safety Team Looks at Possible DEF Exemption, Dyes

Concerned about the major safety risk associated with potential diesel exhaust fluid (DEF) contamination in turbine aircraft, a government-industry safety evaluation team is recommending that the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) exempt airport vehicles mandatory use of the additive. The recommendation was among 15 that the FAA Safety Risk Management Team (SRM) developed after evaluating risks associated with on-airport DEF use.

Recommendations also surrounded training for DEF handling, communicating of the associated risks, exploring the potential of dyes for identification of the additive, reaching out to manufacturers and suppliers on the potential damage, conducting further research of the reactions involved with DEF, and updating guidance and other safety information, among other suggestions.

Many other initiatives are more collaborative and already underway. The FAA and industry have sounded the alarm in the general public about the risk, and NATA has issued decals to clearly identify DEF containers. For the full article, click here.

Additionally, if you are interested in receiving NATA's DEF container decals, please email Safety1st@nata.aero.

NATA Members and Part 135 operators from Tennessee took to Capitol Hill in Washington, DC to meet with Members of the House and Senate, and key congressional staff to discuss illegal dry leases. Representing NATA before their elected officials were Grande Aviation, HessJet, and AB Jets. The group also met with the Senate Aviation Subcommittee’s staff, a group of highly influential policy experts responsible for drafting legislation, conducting oversight, and advising the Senate on aviation matters.

Terry Hess with HessJet said, “the issue of double standards regarding 135 stakeholders and non-compliant entities providing the same air transportation services is consequential to our business. The congressional discussions were productive, on point, and genuinely received by members of congress. We feel confident going forward that the relationships developed will be fruitful towards a single standard of regulation, safety, taxation, and national security that supports 135 stakeholders parallel desire to innovate and provide easier and more transparent access for the traveling public. As a 135 stakeholder, NATA membership has returned exponentially. Good to know more 135 stakeholders will soon have the similar opportunities.”

“I commend our Tennessee members for their commitment and vision on this visit. I’m looking forward to working with more of our operator members to tell their story to policymakers here in DC,” said Jonathon Freye, NATA Vice President of Government and Public Affairs.

Sheltair Aviation and Blade Announce Strategic Partnership

The two companies are to work together on how to build the infrastructure necessary to support the future arrival of electrically powered vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) aircraft. Sheltair is the sole operator of helicopter landing sites at New York’s JFK and LaGuardia airports, while Blade is the largest arranger of helicopter flights for civilian travel in the USA. It maintains approximately 90% market share for by-the-seat helicopter travel in New York City. “The combination of Sheltair’s exclusive presence at both of New York’s commercial airports and Blade’s leading market share cannot be replicated by any other companies in existence today,” said Rob Wiesenthal, Blade’s CEO. Duncan Aviation's Battle Creek & Kalamazoo FBO Facilities Receive IS-BAH Stage I Accreditation

Duncan Aviation has announced that its Fixed Based Operator (FBO) facilities in Battle Creek and Kalamazoo, MI, have received Stage I accreditation from the International Standard for Business Aircraft Handling (IS-BAH). Duncan Aviation’s other two main facilities in Lincoln, NE, and Provo, UT, had previously earned this accreditation. “The reason for an organization to have an SMS is that it coordinates all safety-related activities to help us better manage hazards and continually improve the safety of our products,” says Duncan Aviation’s Manager of Audit Programs Mike Brown. “Because of the nature of our industry, hazards can never be completely eliminated, but the SMS lets us develop plans as a company, learn from mistakes, and mitigate risks and hazards so we make informed decisions going forward.” Read more
