NATA Submits Changes to NFPA 409: Standard on Aircraft Hangars

Last week, the Association announced that it has submitted proposed changes to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) 409: Standard on Aircraft Hangars addressing the issues of foam fire suppression systems in aircraft hangars. The comments were developed through a collaboration with NATA members and the aviation industry. The Association’s comments were also based on the University of Maryland’s research report, “Review of Foam Fire Suppression System Discharges in Aircraft Hangars,” written by Dr. James Milke and undergraduate students from the Department of Fire Protection Engineering.

“We are excited to propose these sensible changes to NFPA 409 that help align the Standard with the reality of our industry,” said Megan Eisenstein, NATA’s Director of Regulatory Affairs. The NFPA 409 Technical Committee on Airport Facilities will meet in early 2020 to begin reviewing the public’s comments. The next revision of NFPA 409 will be published in 2021.

Lapse in Visa Waiver Program (VWP) Signatory Carrier Agreements

As a reminder, for an aviation or maritime carrier to be eligible to transport VWP travelers without penalty, carriers must become signatory to the VWP. Carriers need to maintain a valid Visa Waiver Program Agreement (CBP Form I-775), valid for 7 years, on file with U.S. Customs and Border Protection. This process is separate from the Electronic System for Travel (ESTA) requirements.

The VWP Signatory Carrier list can be located here. This list is updated monthly. The renewal link is here.

In meetings of the General Aviation Joint Safety Council (GAJSC), industry representatives, including NATA, expressed interest in educational material for pilots to know what non-prescription medications could be taken without compromising flight safety. After extensive discussions internally and with industry, FAA has developed a web-based tool that pilots can use as a reference when considering taking over-the-counter medications. The list, along with other information pertinent to ensuring medical fitness to fly, is located at www.faa.gov/go/pilotmeds.

The FAA intends to continually update the information on these pages as new research and medications become available. A link to the FAA information is also available on the NATA website, found here.

Give Back to Help Inspire Aviation’s Future

Give back to the aviation industry this year with a donation to the National Air Transportation Foundation (NATF) and/or Safety 1st Future Development funds. With your donations, we look to expand upon the efforts of the Foundation to fit the needs of our industry and foster the aviation aspirations of our youngest industry members through our scholarships and grants. On the education and training side, donations to the Safety 1st Future Development fund will be crucial in the progress of the new training platform and upcoming updates as we continue to add more courses and make changes based on user needs.

All NATF donations are tax deductible, NATF is the 501(c)(3) charitable arm of NATA to enhance the safety and quality of service provided to the flying public by assisting aviation businesses in the education and training of their employees. All Safety 1st donations: Please be aware that 7% of your dues/donations are not deductible because federal lobbying expenses are non-deductible as an ordinary business expense.

Flexjet Opens London Office to Support Euro Expansion

Flexjet has opened a new office and customer hospitality space in London as part of the private aviation group’s plans to expand its presence in the European market. The U.S.-based group said the new facility, located in the upmarket Mayfair district of the UK capital, will provide fractional owners with benefits similar to those available through the Flexjet Red Label program with the Flexjet-Exclusive Private Terminals at airports. The London office was opened by Marine Eugène, the former NetJets executive who became Flexjet’s European Managing Director in January. “In the coming year, we expect to make further announcements about our European expansion, including the acquisition of new aircraft and new programs to expand access for Europe-based customers who surely will gravitate to the Flexjet Red Label experience.” Read more.
