NATA Announces Leadership Changes
|
|
The National Air Transportation
Association (NATA) Board of Directors is pleased to announce the selection of
Timothy R. Obitts as its President and CEO. He succeeds Gary Dempsey, who
assumed the role of NATA’s President after six years of service on the
Association’s Board of Directors, including a term as Chairman of the Board.
“It is a great honor to be at
the helm of an association with such a rich history and bright future. NATA’s
relevance is even more important now than it was 80 years ago as we look toward
the advent of new technology, ingenuity that continuously raises the bar on
safety, and an ever-increasing commitment to greater environmental
stewardship,” stated Timothy Obitts. “I join the Board, the staff, and the
members in expressing gratitude to Gary Dempsey for leveraging his extensive
experience, both at the board level and as President, to help elevate the
Association and industry. I look forward to continuing to work with the Board
and our talented staff to further his legacy.”
In addition, Jason Miller, who
has served NATA for seven years as CFO, was named Chief Operating Officer/Chief
Financial Officer. “We look forward to Tim’s leadership as we enter a new
decade of service and congratulate Gary on all his success while serving as
NATA President,” said NATA Board Chair Curt Castagna. “The Board is confident
that Tim, along with the support of COO/CFO Jason Miller and the dedicated
staff, will continue to advance safety and prosperity throughout our membership
and the entire aviation business community.”

Operations During the Coronavirus Outbreak
|
|
NATA representatives have been
monitoring the ongoing government provisions for aircraft operations affected
by the Coronavirus outbreak, specifically those operations involving carrying
passengers who have been in China. The situation is extremely dynamic, and
operators are urged to review information from all sources to ensure awareness
of the latest restrictions and provisions. Guidance that is available to date
includes a bulletin published by the Carrier Liaison Program of US Customs and
Border Protection (available here), a DHS document (available here), and a Presidential Proclamation (available here). The FAA also has a website that includes resources for carriers
(available here).
Note that passengers arriving from the impacted
areas in China may be denied entry into the United States.
Some exceptions are made for
cargo flights and for operating and deadheading crew.
CBP advises us that the most
current information is likely to be available at a flight’s first Port of Entry
and through CBP’s Regional Carrier Liaison Groups, listed below:

Urban Air Mobility (UAM) is a new frontier that will
radically change business and operational models. Aircraft ground service
providers and air charter operators will provide the operations and support
that will enable UAM’s success. As the national point of expertise in the core
business competencies of our members,
NATA is launching a new Urban Air Mobility committee this year.
As UAM moves from concept to reality, topics such as
propulsion, aircraft and operational certification, societal acceptance, noise,
and local zoning regulations have dominated stakeholder conversations. Although
these issues are indeed some of the most significant challenges, and thus have garnered
commensurate attention, other topics like passenger facilitation and aircraft
ground support have largely been overlooked. But, as with conventional
aviation, UAM will rely heavily on a broad ecosystem of passenger accommodation
facilities, skilled personnel, and ground support equipment and services in
order to create an efficient system able to realize the full potential of UAM.
UAM providers have identified customer experience as a key
spoke of the flywheel that UAM will require for commercial viability. While
emerging UAM companies have core expertise in fleet operations and passenger
aggregation, a natural synergy exists with legacy aviation service providers
that operate brick-and-mortar infrastructure at airports and heliports across
the United States.
If you are a NATA member interested in participating in the
UAM committee, please contact Jonathon Freye, Vice President of Government and
Public Affairs at jfreye@nata.aero.
