The NATA Ground Handling Safety Symposium is a new annual event developed by the NATA Safety Committee to promote safety at FBOs and other businesses utilizing general aviation ground handling. Held September 26-27 at the NTSB Training Center in Ashburn, Virginia, the symposium is designed for safety professionals, directors of safety, line service managers or operations managers — anyone who is responsible for making sure that aircraft are handled safely.

The theme of this year’s program is Building a Better Safety Management System and includes: The Big Picture, Safety Management & IS-BAH; Practical Approaches to Risk Assessment; Safety Promotion and Your Organizational Culture; Safety Reporting & Employee Buy-In; The Intersection of Safety & Service; Emergency Response Basics for FBOs; and Data & General Aviation Ground Handling. Eduardo A. Angeles, in-house senior counsel to Los Angeles World Airports (LAWA) and former head of the Federal Aviation Administration’s (FAA) Airports Division, will serve as Adjunct Professor of Aviation Law at California State University, Los Angeles (CSULA) starting next fall. “We are deeply honored to have such a talented individual, renowned attorney and respected industry expert share his knowledge and experience with our students,” said Keith Mew, Ph.D., Chair of the CSULA Aviation Administration Program. “Eduardo Angeles is an amazing role model for the next generation of aviation industry executives who will assume leadership positions in both the public and private sectors.” At CSULA, Angeles joins NATA members Randall Berg, a 30-year adjunct professor and former American Association of Airport Executives (AAAE) Chair, and Aeroplex/Aerolease Group CEO Curt Castagna, a 25-year adjunct professor and recently-appointed member of the L.A. County Aviation Commission. As the FAA’s Associate Administrator for Airports from 2014 to 2016, Angeles oversaw $3.5 billion in annual airport improvement grants and managed programs for national airport planning and development. In his current role as Senior Assistant City Attorney, Angeles is assigned by the L.A. City Attorney’s Office to the Legal Division of LAWA, the agency responsible for the operation and governance of Los Angeles International and Van Nuys Airports. Read more.

Last week, Gateway USA LLC doing business as Clay Lacy Aviation, LLC (CLA-Seattle) announced it would undergo the process for the first Stage II IS-BAH registration in the United States. Only three other ground-handling operations in the world (all in Europe) have reached this milestone. In June 2016, CLA-Seattle was recognized as an International Standard for Business Aircraft Handling (IS-BAH) “Trailblazer” FBO by the International Business Aviation Council (IBAC), when they earned one of the first Stage I registrations.
