NATA’s John McGraw Reappointed to TSA’s Aviation Security Advisory Committee
The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) issued a press release on 9/27, announcing several new members of the Aviation Security Advisory Committee (ASAC) and reaffirming several existing members, including NATA. The ASAC provides TSA with expertise from industry members representing the entire spectrum of civil aviation. ASAC subcommittees and working groups explore specific issue areas (e.g. cargo, general aviation, secondary barriers, and insider threat) and develop recommendations for security enhancements presented to TSA through the full ASAC. Most recently, the ASAC approved a suite of recommendations developed by the Insider Threat subcommittee, on which NATA is represented, to improve the capability to mitigate insider threats to aviation operations.

Over 200,000 Commercial Flights Using Low-Carbon Fuel Show an Energy Transition is Possible
Last week, the aviation community gathered in Montreal for the 40th session of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) Assembly. The aviation industry demonstrated its commitment to climate action, surpassing 200,000 passenger flights using sustainable aviation fuels. Through deployment of new technology, improvements in operations, and infrastructure, the sector is working to improve efficiency and cut CO2 emissions in the short- and medium-term.
Long-term commitments to halve CO2 emissions from the sector will rely on the introduction of radical new technology and an energy transition to fossil free sustainable aviation fuels. Michael Gill, Executive Director of the cross-industry Air Transport Action Group says: “Aviation has always been an industry exploring the cutting edge of technology and a number of new developments give us guidance on the shape of air transport operations in the future. Electric propulsion and even hydrogen are starting to become more robust technology options, although a great deal of research remains to be done in both areas.” Read more.

FAA Fly Safe: Prevent Loss of Control Accidents Initiative
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and the general aviation (GA) community’s national #FlySafe campaign helps educate GA pilots about how to avoid loss of control (LOC) accidents.
A LOC accident involves an unintended departure of an aircraft from controlled flight. LOC can happen when the aircraft enters a flight regime that is outside its normal flight envelope and quickly develops into a stall or spin. It can introduce an element of surprise for the pilot.
This series touches on the importance of advanced preflight checks, post-maintenance vigilance, and how you can incorporate safety into every flight.

Avflight Broke Ground in Grand Rapids
FBO chain operator Avflight has broken ground on its $6 million-plus FBO complex at Gerald R. Ford International Airport, in Grand Rapids, MI. The Avfuel sister-company was selected earlier this year as the airport’s second service provider. A ceremony last week – attended by company executives, airport authority board members, and local dignitaries – marked the beginning of work on the five-acre leasehold, which is expected to open in spring 2020. “We are anxious to break ground on this new facility, and we are proud to see growth in general aviation at our airport as the demand for more options increases,” said airport President and CEO Tory Richardson, adding it generates more than $3.1 billion in economic output in West Michigan each year. “As our community grows, so does the need for air travel and services associated with air travel.” Read more.
