NATA Brings Back Its Air Charter Summit, Addressing 135 Challenges & Opportunities
Last week, NATA announced its plan to bring back its popular Air Charter Summit in June of 2020. This event, intended for Part 135 operators and related stakeholders, will provide a forum for discussions about how to maximize safety and success, while also addressing major threats to the industry. Save the date for the Summit, which will be held in conjunction with NATA’s Aviation Business Conference in Washington, D.C. from June 16-18, 2020. “At our core, NATA pays attention to the needs of its members and the industry climate. After talking with our membership, we believe that 2020 is a great time to bring back the Air Charter Summit, particularly now as the world focuses in on the issue of combatting illegal charter operations and sham dry leases whereby the lessee does not have operational control of the aircraft,” stated NATA COO Tim Obitts. In the past few months, since the release of its Illegal Charter Survey, NATA has recorded a tremendous uptick in the number of filings on its Illegal Charter hotline and online portal. The survey has helped NATA gain ground towards understanding the nuances of the issues surrounding illegal operations that its members are facing. Read more.

Last week, the Senate passed stopgap spending legislation that would protect against a looming government shutdown and keep federal funding on autopilot through November 21. The upper chamber cleared the bill, H.R. 4378 (116), in an 81-16 vote, and the President has signed the bill. The measure buys more time for bicameral negotiations on a dozen fiscal 2020 spending bills that would provide updated funding levels for 15 federal departments and dozens of smaller federal agencies. Senate Appropriations Chairman Richard Shelby (R-AL) warned earlier that bipartisan agreement on those bills could elude lawmakers if Congress and the White House aren’t able to reach an agreement on border security. “If these conditions are not met, I fear we are moving headlong toward a full-year continuing resolution,” Shelby said during a full committee markup of the Senate’s Interior-Environment, State-Foreign Operations, Commerce-Justice-Science, Homeland Security, and Legislative Branch spending bills. Duncan Aviation Achieves SMS Level 3 Certification
Duncan Aviation has announced that Manager of Audit Programs Mike Brown has accepted a certificate on the company’s behalf from WYVERN Ltd. The certification recognizes Duncan Aviation for having a Safety Management System (SMS) in place at its repair station in Lincoln, Nebraska. “SMS Level 3 means that our SMS policy can’t just be a manual on a shelf collecting dust,” Brown says. “The organizations that set international standards want to see the policy in action. WYVERN verified that our SMS coordinates all safety-related activity so we can better manage hazards. The audit found that we as a company use the SMS to help us learn from history, mitigate risks, and make informed decisions as we resolve issues.” Read more.
