nullIdaho Governor Urges President Obama To Defend General Aviation

On April 12, 2012, the Alliance for Aviation Across America released a letter on behalf of Idaho Governor C.L. “Butch” Otter requesting President Obama to recognize the importance of general aviation to local communities and economies in Idaho and across the country.

The governor pointed out that the industry is facing onerous “user fee” taxes that could be detrimental to the industry and would negatively impact the economy. In March, he signed into Idaho law a bill that exempts aircraft parts, supplies and maintenance from the state’s sales and use taxes.

Governor Otter joins a list of state and local officials who have asked the Obama administration to recognize the vital importance of general aviation. This year alone, a letter from 100 mayors in 48 states was sent to the President deprecating attacks on general aviation, and 37 states have issued proclamations highlighting the positive impacts general aviation has in their states.

nullACSF Receives FAA Approval For ASAP Demonstration Program

The Air Charter Safety Foundation (ACSF) has received approval from the FAA as an aviation safety action program (ASAP) manager and to conduct a demonstration program for on-demand charter operators. The program will begin with two charter operators under the jurisdiction of the FAA Minneapolis Flight Standards District Office (FSDO), and will eventually expand to other charter operators in the FAA Great Lakes Region that are interested in participating in the ACSF ASAP program.

“We are extremely pleased that the FAA is allowing the ACSF to offer this invaluable safety tool to charter operators,” said ACSF Chairman Jim Christiansen. “Companies using ASAP have benefited greatly by learning about and resolving safety issues before an unfortunate safety event occurs.”

An ASAP is a reporting program that allows employees of participating air carriers and repair station certificate holders to identify and report safety issues to management and to the FAA for resolution, without fear that the FAA will use reports accepted under the program to take legal enforcement action against them, or that companies will use such information to take disciplinary action.

“The ACSF appreciates the support and hard work of the FAA Great Lakes Region and Minneapolis FSDO staff that made this program a reality,” noted Christiansen. “We believe this effort will raise the safety bar in the on-demand charter industry.”

The objective of the ACSF ASAP program is to expand to other FAA regions, and to encourage charter operators that lack the resources to establish their own ASAP program to participate and benefit from this valuable safety tool.

nullAir Charter Summit Provides Important Regulatory Review
FAA Panel to Address Rules and Regulations on the Horizon

Register today for the 2012 NATA Air Charter Summit. The 2012 Air Charter Summit will be held June 11-13, at the Westfields Marriott in Chantilly/Dulles, Virginia. The summit provides an important opportunity to learn about the Part 135 regulatory landscape straight from industry experts and government officials.

With a plethora of new rules and regulations on the horizon, one of the most important sessions at the summit will be a full FAA regulatory review panel. FAA representatives responsible for Part 135 oversight will provide attendees updates on current regulatory initiatives and details on the status of the industry and upcoming actions the FAA has planned for Part 135 operations. With new rules expected that deal with how you operate positioning, repositioning, or deadhead flights, it is important to hear from the FAA on these initiatives and get their estimates on timing so you can be prepared and involved in the crafting of those rules.

Other timely Air Charter Summit topics include:

  • Adapting to New FAA Guidance for New Hire Pilot Training
  • IRS Efforts to Expand Taxes to Charter Management Agreement Fees
  • New Training Offerings from NATA

The Air Charter Summit is also a great opportunity to network with other charter companies around the country - meet new friends and connect with those you already know. To highlight our partnership with the Veterans Airlift Command (VAC), a charitable organization that gives free transportation to wounded veterans and their families for medical treatment or other needs, NATA is collaborating with the VAC to shake up our usual formal dinner. A fun social dinner is planned for Monday night featuring a raffle to benefit the VAC, with prizes including an iPad.

An optional tour of the National Air and Space Museum, Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center will be available. Featured aviation artifacts on the tour include the Lockheed SR-71 Blackbird, the fastest jet in the world; the Boeing Dash 80, the prototype of the 707; the Boeing B-29 Superfortress Enola Gay; and the deHavilland Chipmunk aerobatic airplane. The tour also features an overlook view at the new Mary Baker Engen Restoration Hangar, where restoration is now underway on a Curtiss SB2C-5 Helldiver and where the museum is beginning restoration on a number of NASA artifacts destined for the Udvar-Hazy Center's James S. McDonnell Space Hangar, which currently features the Space Shuttle Enterprise, the Gemini VII space capsule, the Mobile Quarantine Unit used upon the return of the Apollo 11 crew, and a Redstone rocket.

To contact NATA, please call 800-808-6282 or email Diane Gleason at dgleason@nata.aero.
