nullWall Street Journal Publishes NATA Views on Air Traffic Control Reform

Last week the Wall Street Journal published the response of NATA President and CEO Tom Hendricks to its May 13th article “Can Air-Traffic Control Go Private?” Expressing concern that the article understates the risks associated with creating a user run air traffic control corporation, Hendricks reminded readers, "While modernizing and adapting for future requirements is an absolute must, let’s ensure we aren’t using more than decade-old assumptions and expectations as a pretense for potentially disruptive changes to the world’s best and safest air-traffic control system."

nullFAA Proposes to Reduce RVSM Requirements

Last week, the FAA issued an NPRM to revise the agency’s requirements for an application to operate in Reduced Vertical Separation Minimum (RVSM) airspace. The RVSM requirement was first promulgated in 1997, and required an approved separate maintenance program before an operator could be authorized to fly in RVSM airspace. This extra step created additional cost and potential for inconsistency between FAA field offices and operators. The proposal lifts the redundant requirement and, according to the FAA, will save operators approximately $14.1million in the first year following the adoption of the final rule.  NATA members will benefit from the cost savings and elimination of potential inconsistencies regarding the maintenance program approvals between FAA offices. Comments are due to the agency by July 27th.
