NATA Discusses FAA Reauthorization at Tarkio Air Show

On Saturday, NATA EVP for Government Affairs, Bill Deere, joined the leaders of other major GA associations at a pilot town hall meeting in Tarkio, MO, hosted by Representative Sam Graves (R-MO). The biannual event draws pilots from all over the country and discussion this year centered on the House Transportation Committee’s proposal, H.R. 2997, the 21st Century AIRR Act, to privatize the nation’s air traffic control system.
The House Republican leadership and Trump Administration have begun whipping Members of Congress to support ATC privatization with a vote expected as early as the week of July 17. The vote is anticipated to be close. It is critical that aviation businesses and their employees immediately contact Congress through NATA’s Legislative Action Center and express their opposition to the legislation.
During the town hall, GA association leaders were adamant in their opposition to privatizing ATC, describing it as the potential death knell for GA in this country. Discussion included the tactics used by airlines in support of the privatization proposal, highlighting many of the outrageous justifications employed by airlines to, in effect, turn over the ATC system to them. It was also noted that ironically GA has been the sector of aviation leading the way in innovation and equipage. Audience members were skeptical of the proposal with several commenting on how the privatization of ATC in Canada has contributed to a major decline in GA activity in that country.

GA Opposition to Privatizing Air Traffic Control Growing

Nearly 50 general aviation groups from across the country have joined NATA in opposing H.R. 2997, the 21st Century AIRR Act, which creates a user fee-funded air traffic control corporation. The House of Representatives will vote on this proposal as early as next week, making it urgent that you immediately contact your Congressmen and Senators in opposition.
GA groups note that establishing a corporation, controlled by the airlines, “will produce uncertainty and unintended consequences without achieving the desired outcomes.” Instead, the groups urge support for reforms that promote modernization of the airspace system and create predictable and stable funding for the FAA. “Any structural or governance reforms that require protections for an important sector of users is fundamentally flawed,” the statement notes.

New CBP Facility Opens at San Antonio International
|

Last month, San Antonio International Airport (SAT) opened its new U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) facility for general aviation. The airport was approved as a U.S. entry port in 2009, and the facility has been in the works since 2012. Last year, CBP processed more than 22,000 international GA passengers and over 4,200 general aviation aircraft at the airport’s temporary facility. “We’ve seen as many as 83 general aviation flights in a single day,” said CBP Port Director Lois Hunter. The city negotiated a public/private partnership with Innova Aerospace to expedite construction of the new 5,000 square foot facility. Innova Aerospace invested nearly $3 million to design and build the facility, while the city’s aviation department constructed the apron and taxiway improvements to provide airside access to the building. To accommodate Global Entry members, the location offers a pair of kiosks to process trusted travelers. “CBP is happy to partner with the San Antonio International Airport on this facility, which will accommodate the growing private and general aircraft industry here,” noted Judson Murdock II, CBP’s Director of Field Operations. The July/August 2017 FAA Safety Briefing focuses on the new BasicMed rule, which offers pilots an alternative to the FAA’s medical qualification process for third class medical certificates. Under BasicMed, a pilot will be required to complete a medical education course every two years, undergo a medical examination every four years, and comply with aircraft and operating restrictions.

Build a Better Safety Management System | NATA Ground Handling Safety Symposium September 26-27 in Ashburn, VA

The NATA Ground Handling Safety Symposium is a new annual event developed by the NATA Safety Committee to promote safety at FBOs and other businesses utilizing general aviation ground handling. Held September 26-27 at the NTSB Training Center in Ashburn, Virginia, the symposium is designed for safety professionals, directors of safety, line service managers or operations managers — anyone who is responsible for making sure that aircraft are handled safely.
The theme of this year’s program is Building a Better Safety Management System and includes: The Big Picture, Safety Management & IS-BAH; Practical Approaches to Risk Assessment; Safety Promotion and Your Organizational Culture; Safety Reporting & Employee Buy-In; The Intersection of Safety & Service; Emergency Response Basics for FBOs; and Data & General Aviation Ground Handling. Jet Linx Surpasses 100 Aircraft Milestone in Private Jet Fleet

Last month, Jet Linx Aviation surpassed its 100th aircraft under management, with 90 aircraft on its FAA certificate and another seven pending to add to its certificate. The Jet Linx fleet also includes four Part 91 aircraft. “Surpassing 100 aircraft under management marks a milestone we are honored and proud to celebrate with our valued aircraft owners, amazing team members and great industry partners,” said Jamie Walker, President & CEO of Jet Linx. “We set out 18 years ago to provide a more personalized approach to guaranteed private jet travel solutions, and this milestone is the ultimate validation of our business model. Industry Veteran Mark Ozenick To Head Dassault Aircraft Services

Dassault recently hired Mark Ozenick to serve as President of Dassault Aircraft Services (DAS). In his new role, Ozenick will be responsible for Dassault’s Falcon Jet service center network in North, South and Central America. He is the founding president and CEO of HeliFlite Shares and co-founder of HeliFlite Aviation Services, Ozenick has nearly four decades of experience, including —senior positions with Aero Mechanical Industries, Valair Aviation, SSA & Company, Elite Aviation and American Eurocopter, among others. He will report to Geoff Chick, Senior Vice President of Customer Services at Dassault Falcon Jet. “Mark brings extensive industry experience to DAS and has a proven commitment to providing a superior customer experience and best-in-class quality of service,” Chick said. “Mark’s broad expertise in customer and operational support will undoubtedly serve him extremely well in this role.” Read more.
