NATA Responds to Informal Part 13 Complaints Filed Against Three Airports
|
|
Last week, NATA sent letters in response to recently filed FAA Part 13 complaints alleging “egregious FBO pricing practices” at Florida’s Key West International Airport (EYW), Illinois’s Waukegan National Airport (UGN), and North Carolina’s Asheville Regional Airport (AVL).
“The assertions made in these complaints reflect a misunderstanding of a number of key points related to the economics of aviation businesses: the pricing of aeronautical services, industry consolidation and the airport sponsor-tenant relationship,” stated NATA Executive Vice President Bill Deere. NATA’s response points out the broader general aviation community has questioned the necessity of this campaign, as illustrated in three recent articles that discuss the initiative’s intellectual underpinnings. The articles conclude that FBO pricing has evolved not as a way to maximize revenue from pilots, but rather in response to the changing reality of general aviation.
“This action is disappointing, coming at a time when the general aviation community is confronting a serious effort to privatize our nation’s air traffic control system,” stated NATA President Martin H. Hiller. “General aviation, as we know it in this nation, is under a real threat. We need to stand united right now and not be concerned with distractions like this." Read more.

Contribute to NATA’s Hurricane Harvey Relief Campaign
|
NATA thanks our members who are assisting in disaster relief efforts in the Houston area. NATA has established a webpage to support the American Red Cross effort and kicked off the campaign with a donation.
From generous humanitarian donations to collecting supplies and providing fuel, food and other amenities for emergency service crews, NATA aviation business members throughout Texas and across the nation are doing their part to assist in Hurricane Harvey disaster relief.
“The generosity and dedication of the aviation business community and their staff is inspiring. NATA members, such as FBOs and airports, have been providing critical ground services and support to relief efforts, while aircraft operators are delivering supplies and aiding in rescue missions. Many others are providing financial support, donations or coordinating resources for these efforts,” stated NATA Executive Vice President and General Counsel Tim Obitts.
NATA members are also offering their facilities as staging areas for emergency crews and providing ramp space for evacuated aircraft.

NATA Reiterates Importance of Continued Outreach to Elected Officials to Oppose ATC Privatization

On Tuesday, August 29th, Bill Deere, NATA’s Executive Vice President for Government and External Affairs, served as the keynote speaker at the 4States Airport Conference in Kansas City, Missouri. Deere spoke on the importance of continued outreach by airports and aviation businesses with their elected representatives in opposition to H.R. 2997, the proposal pending in the House of Representatives to privatize our nation’s air traffic control system. The annual 4States Airport Conference brings together representatives from general aviation airports and businesses across the Midwest, including Kansas, Missouri and Nebraska, to learn about the industry’s top issues, how they will affect the industry, and what to anticipate in the future.
“General aviation airport managers and aviation businesses are the people lawmakers must hear from if we are to prevent the privatization of our nation’s air traffic control system,” stated Deere. The proposal, if enacted, “will shift the emphasis of aviation investment away from the national airspace to one focused more on airline route structures.” Deere encouraged attendees to visit NATA’s Legislative Action Center, that features easy ways for people to contact lawmakers and join the fight against a proposal that will forever change general aviation as we know it in this nation. “The time has never been more urgent to act,” Deere concluded.

The NATA Ground Handling Safety Symposium is a new annual event developed by the NATA Safety Committee to promote safety at FBOs and other businesses utilizing general aviation ground handling. Held September 26th and 27th at the NTSB Training Center in Ashburn, Virginia, the symposium is designed for safety professionals, directors of safety, line service managers or operations managers — anyone who is responsible for making sure that aircraft are handled safely.

This Program — resourced by actual flight surgeons — was created by Harvey Watt & Company, in conjunction with former NASA/Space Shuttle Recovery Team Senior & Chief Flight Surgeons, and US Space Command/USAFR Senior Flight Surgeons. The Program delivers aid to Part 135, Part 125, Part 91 and Part 91K operators before, during and after flights:
- Preflight coverage includes the creation and maintenance of on-board medical kits appropriate for each aircraft and its mission, crew medical kit training, flight planning with real-time medical and travel information for locations on itinerary and Go/No Go Assessments.
- Inflight, users receive emergency advice, provided by flight surgeons.
- Post flight, the Program can coordinate ground medical assets and evacuations when appropriate and incident documentation reporting will be provided to management within twenty-four hours of the event.

Last week, Aviation Management Consulting Group (AMCG) announced the recent addition of Bryan Johnson to the AMCG team as a consultant. Johnson’s 20-year aviation career includes airport planning, management, operations, and development experience within general aviation and commercial air carrier service airports. Prior to joining AMCG, he was the Airport Director at Rocky Mountain Metropolitan Airport (BJC – Broomfield, Colorado) and formerly, the Assistant Director of Aviation at Quad City International Airport (MLI – Moline, Illinois). “The entire AMCG team is excited to have Bryan join the firm and bring with him a broad range of airport management experiences, industry relationships throughout the Great Lakes and Northwest regions, and ideas to assist the firm’s clients with enhancing their GAME (General Aviation Management Excellence),” said Jeff A. Universal Aviation UK Earns IS-BAH Accreditation

Universal Aviation UK, based at London-Stansted International Airport (EGSS) has passed an International Standard for Business Aircraft Handling (IS-BAH) audit and is now an official IS-BAH accredited location. Universal Aviation, the ground support division of Universal Weather and Aviation, Inc., has more than 40 locations in 20 countries. “Our Universal Aviation Safety Team is committed to having the highest global safety standards and has worked tirelessly over the past two years to attain this mark of distinction for our location,” said Sean Raftery, Managing Director, Universal Aviation UK and Ireland. Charlie Mularski, Vice President, International, Universal added, “Universal Aviation UK is the first of our locations to earn IS-BAH accreditation, but will not be the last, as we are fully committed to reaching this level of distinction at all of our locations.” “Over the next year, five more Universal Aviation ground support locations will be going through IS-BAH audits, starting with Universal Aviation Singapore. Meridian Hayward Names Carlos Rodriguez New General Manager
|

Meridian recently announced Carlos Rodriguez as the new General Manager of Meridian Hayward at Hayward Executive Airport. Rodriguez had previously been serving as Operations Manager at the same location. In his new role, he will be responsible for overseeing and managing the daily operations of the facility. Carlos began his career with Meridian in 2002, when the company was part of the Million Air franchise, moving up through the ranks and becoming the company’s first Training & Safety Coordinator in February of 2013. “In 2016, I was very excited to join Meridian’s expansion to the west coast as the company was in the process of laying the foundation of its culture in the heart of the San Francisco Bay area,” said Rodriguez. “I am extremely proud of Carlos and all he has accomplished over the last 14 years,” said Ken Forester, Meridian CEO. “He exemplifies what we stand for at Meridian. The Air Charter Safety Foundation (ACSF) is pleased to announce that its member Unity Jets is at the forefront in achieving the highest levels of safety in the private aviation industry. “Unity Jets has been a member of ACSF since 2015 and places an emphasis on obtaining high level safety data, records, and statistics.
