NATA and Industry Launch Initiative to Promote the Widespread Use of Sustainable Alternative Jet Fuel in Business Aviation
|
|
Today, at the 2018 European Business Aviation Convention & Exhibition in Geneva, NATA and a coalition of other leading industry organizations released the Business Aviation Guide to the Use of Sustainable Alternative Jet Fuel (SAJF), providing a roadmap for alternative jet fuel adoption. The launch occurred at an industry Media Luncheon with representatives from EBAA, GAMA, IBAC, NATA and NBAA signing an agreement of support for the initiative. NATA’s Executive Vice President Tim Obitts and Chairman-elect Jeff Ross, President and CEO of Ross Aviation, participated in the launch.
The guide is designed to explain what SAJF is, and what it is not. The aim is to answer questions and allay any concerns that our community of operators, FBOs, owners, pilots, fuel providers, airports and others may have about the performance, safety and appropriateness of using SAJF wherever it is available.
In a related press release, Obitts stated, “As sustainable alternative jet fuel is in its introductory stage for general aviation, NATA believes it is imperative for the industry to continue to work in a collaborative manner to both educate the aviation community and make its widespread use a reality. If an operator or an FBO is interested in using SAJF, it is important that they contact their fuel supplier.”

NATA’s John McGraw to Serve on TSA Aviation Security Advisory Committee
|
|
On May 24th, Transportation Security Administration Administrator David P. Pekoske announced the appointment of 31 members, including NATA’s Director of Regulatory Affairs John McGraw, to serve on the agency’s Aviation Security Advisory Committee (ASAC). The committee, formed in 1989, provides recommendations for improving aviation security methods, equipment and procedures.
“The Aviation Security Advisory Committee plays a vital role in helping TSA focus on risk-based security,” said Pekoske in a related press release. “I thank the outgoing, current and newly appointed members of the committee for their service and dedication to helping TSA strengthen its layered approach to aviation security.”
The ASAC, a statutory committee under P.L. 113-238, enhances TSA’s security posture through consultation with key partners on aviation security matters, including on the development, refinement and implementation of policies, programs, rulemaking and security directives pertaining to aviation security. Pilot Records Database Opened to All Part 135 Operators
|
|
A recent Information for Operators (InFO) document, InFO 18005, announced the FAA is expanding its beta release of the Pilot Records Database (PRD). The PRD will ultimately replace the current Pilot Records Improvement Act (PRIA) process for all air carriers. Late last year the FAA invited specific air carriers to begin using the PRD. The FAA is now opening up voluntary access to the PRD to all Part 135 operators.
Beginning in 1997, PRIA required air carriers to check a pilot’s background as part of the hiring process. In 2010, Congress mandated that the FAA develop and manage an electronic database to house and supply the required records, so that operators are able to more easily obtain them. The PRD is that new system.
Ultimately all pilot background checks will be required to be conducted using the PRD instead of the PRIA process. Carriers interested in participating in the process should review the first beta release notice, InFO 17019 and the newest announcement, InFO 18005 for details on the participation process and FAA contacts.

NATA’s latest innovative offering, the Safety 1st Fuel QC Management System (FQMS), is a cloud-based digital aviation fuel quality control management suite that replaces paper-based systems. The FQMS blends an easy to use, mobile-optimized inspection and maintenance feature with cloud-based record keeping and a digital process called Compliance Sentry. This ensures that inspections and maintenance are completed on schedule and alerts management to any non-standard conditions and trends. A customizable alert system and digital access to records provides a seamless visibility into the system for supervisors and managers.

Enhance Your Safety Team’s Professional and Technical Development | Three NATA Safety 1st Events in August and September
|
|
NATA Safety 1st will offer three events to enhance safety professionals’ leadership and technical skills, as well as heighten their understanding of several aspects within ground handling aviation safety. These events will encourage knowledge-sharing and best practices and cover top challenges and opportunities within the general aviation safety community.
On July 31-August 1, NATA Safety 1st will hold its popular Advanced Line Service (ALS) Workshop at Austin Executive Airport in Texas. This workshop is designed to develop your line service team into the next leaders of your company and includes sessions on fuel quality control, motivation and leadership techniques, customer service and fire safety training, and the impact of human factors on aviation ground handling. The second annual NATA Safety 1st Ground Handling Safety Symposium will return September 11-12 at the NTSB Training Center in Ashburn, VA. The Symposium is a two-day event developed by the NATA Safety Committee to promote safety at FBOs and other general aviation ground handling businesses/operations. The symposium is tailored for aviation professionals, including directors of safety, line service managers, operations managers and flight departments — any stakeholder responsible for ensuring the safe handling of aircraft. On September 18-19, NATA Safety 1st will hold its new Certified QC Inspector Workshop at Wilson Air in Charlotte, NC. Workshop attendees will learn about topics such as fuel characteristics, filtration, sampling & testing, maintenance and setting up a conformant inspection program. The program features both classroom instruction and hands-on experience in the most common fuel quality control tasks. Additionally, attendees will receive instruction on developing internal QC training programs that assures all refueling personnel understand the basics of aviation fuel handling and quality management. BBA Aviation, Parent Company of Signature Flight Support to Purchase Epic Aviation
|
|
BBA Aviation, parent company of Signature Flight Support, announced last week that it will purchase Epic Aviation, pending government and regulatory approval. According to BBA, Epic will act as a separate operating business within its portfolio. The addition of Epic's locations will complement the existing Signature Select affiliate program, which will operate alongside Signature’s owned FBO network, bringing it to more than 400 locations worldwide. The two companies previously developed the Epic/Signature Multi-Service Aviation Card, which is currently accepted for payment at more than 8,000 locations worldwide. Bombardier Grows its Global Family of Business Jets with Launch of Global 5500 and Global 6500 Aircraft
|
|
On May 27th in Geneva, Bombardier Business Aircraft unveiled two additions to its business jet fleet: the Global 5500 and Global 6500 aircraft, with class-leading ranges of 5,700 and 6,600 nautical miles, respectively, top speeds of Mach 0.90 and Bombardier’s smooth ride technology.
“Bombardier’s two newest Global aircraft are the result of our unrelenting commitment to innovation, excellence and most of all, our desire to deliver unmatched capabilities to our customers,” said David Coleal, President, Bombardier Business Aircraft. “This next generation of performance stems from the winning DNA of our Global family of aircraft, now further enhanced through a newly optimized wing, a fully reimagined cabin and new, purpose-built engines.”

Granite Air Center Announces Solar Power Initiative
|
|
Last week, Granite Air Center, Inc. announced a partnership with Norwich Solar Technologies to install a 218.1-kilowatt DC, Net-Metered Photovoltaic (PV) System on the main hangar rooftop at their facility. This addition is the largest solar array in Lebanon, NH to date. Completed in early May 2018, the solar array will provide Granite Air long-term energy cost reduction and stability through the integration of clean, renewable solar electricity.
