Senate Moving on FAA Bill – What NATA is Monitoring
|
|
Late last week, the Senate Commerce Committee began the process of asking for amendments to S. 1405, the FAA Reauthorization Act of 2017, which indicates that movement on the FAA bill is beginning. NATA will be monitoring the bill’s progress and any amendments that will impact the aviation business community. Specifically, NATA is advocating for the retention of our legislative “asks” related to regulatory consistency, better tracking of Part 135 accident and incident data, and language to combat illegal charter as well as to fight against harms to the community, including efforts to promote illegal flight sharing and push for transparency in the air ambulance industry. Knowing there is very limited floor time, and to ensure the FAA bill receives time before August, committee leaders may attach the bill to other pieces of legislation, creating a package of bills that they hope will pass in days.

NATA and GA Coalition Urge House Veterans Affairs Committee to Reject Attempts to Cap VA Flight Training
|
|
Last week, NATA and a coalition of general aviation and air medical service providers jointly submitted a letter to the House Veteran’s Affairs committee in opposition to language that calls for a cap on veteran’s flight training benefits. The groups note that the legislation, HR 5649, does contain provisions that support the benefits program - including the program’s structure, coverage for obtaining a private pilot’s license, and flexibility for public schools to contract for flight training. However, “the proposed capping of program payments undermines the important goal of helping our nation’s veterans enter a field where they are desperately needed.” Implementing caps for flight training means insufficient funds for veterans who wish to use their GI Bill benefits toward a career in aviation, leaving the veteran the choice of abandoning the path or incurring debt by personally subsidizing the difference or taking on student loans. “We urge the Committee to remove the discriminatory cap on flight training at public institutions and to keep the promises that will allow veterans their choice of career,” the groups conclude.

Free FAA Webinar to Explain Pilot Records Database Fundamentals | July 19 at 2 pm CDT

On July 19th at 2pm Central, the FAA will host a new Pilot Records Database (PRD) webinar.
NATA encourages all PRD users to participate in the webinar, which has been created specifically for Aviation Employers who may use PRD to satisfy portions of PRIA. The webinar will describe the fundamental functions of PRD, including a walk-through of how an airman provides consent and how an air carrier or operator uses the PRD to view an airman’s FAA records. It will also outline the various user-roles in PRD and how they’re managed. For more information or to register, click here.

The 2nd annual NATA Safety 1st Ground Handling Safety Symposium will return September 11-12 at the NTSB Training Center in Ashburn, VA. Bombardier to Add HUD/EVS Option for the Challenger 350
|

Bombardier recently announced that a lightweight Rockwell Collins head-up display and enhanced vision system will be available as a factory option on new Bombardier Challenger 350s, as well as a retrofit for in-service airplanes. It will be cut in on the production line next year. The combined HUD/EVS will further expand the avionics functionalities of the Pro Line 21-equipped super-midsize business jet, which comes standard with a synthetic vision system. Cutter Aviation to Begin Pilatus Maintenance Operations at Denver Centennial Airport

Last week, Cutter Aviation announced they will begin Pilatus Aircraft maintenance operations at the Denver Centennial Airport (APA). It was awarded the Pilatus sales and service center dealership for the U.S. Southwest — covering Southern California, Texas, Arizona, Colorado and New Mexico — in early April.
Cutter’s Denver Centennial location is equipped to serve the full line of Pilatus aircraft, including the PC-12 and PC-24.
