House Action on AIRR Act Delayed

While Congress was not in session last week, House Transportation Committee staff work continued on the H.R. 4441, the Aviation Innovation, Reform, and Reauthorization (AIRR) Act. The legislation’s centerpiece proposal, to create a user fee-funded, federally chartered, not-for-profit air traffic control corporation, is opposed by NATA and others in the general aviation community. The Transportation Committee’s leadership hoped to bring the bill to the House floor for consideration this week. However, opposition from House Democrats, other House committees and House conservatives resulted in a Leadership decision not to place the bill on this week’s House calendar. The legislation still poses a significant threat to aviation businesses and if you have not already done so, NATA encourages you to contact your elected representatives and express your opposition to the proposal.

United States and Cuba Reestablish Scheduled Air Service

On February 16^th, the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) announced that it signed an arrangement to restore scheduled air services between the United States and Cuba. The order will facilitate visits for travelers that fall under one of the 12 categories authorized by the U.S. Department of the Treasury’s Office of Foreign Assets Control for travel to Cuba and does not limit charter services. U.S. carriers will now have the opportunity to operate up to a total of 110 daily roundtrip flights between the two nations. The arrangement invites applications from U.S. carriers and initiates a proceeding for DOT to select which U.S. carriers will be able to offer scheduled flights to Cuba, and from which U.S. points. The department will consider which proposals will offer and maintain the best service to the traveling and shipping public. Applications are due March 2.

Industry Participation Grows for the Safety 1^st General Aviation Misfueling Prevention Training

To date, more than 800 industry professionals have already participated and received a certificate of completion for the Safety 1^st General Aviation Misfueling Prevention Program. NATA launched the free, industry-wide awareness training on February 3^rd. The program serves a variety of aviation professionals and includes downloadable resources. It also includes tracks for pilots, line service professionals, and FBO managers and customer service representatives. Visit www.preventmisfueling.com.

Last Week to Submit Your Nominations for the Industry Excellence and AMT Awards

Today, February 22^nd is the last day to submit your nominations for the 2015 Industry Excellence Awards The deadline for the 2016 Aviation Maintenance Technician Employer Award Program is Friday, February 26^th. Each year, NATA presents awards to the exceptional individuals and companies that have helped to improve the general aviation community. The recipients of these awards are chosen based upon NATA member-submitted nominations. The Industry Excellence Awards, along with the AMT Employer Awards, will be presented at a luncheon held during NATA’s Aviation Business Conference in June 2016. NATA Member Gill Aviation Completes Airport Improvements

David Wayne Hooks Airport (DWH) in Houston, TX completed a two-year capital improvement program valued at more than $1 million. Improvements included resurfacing of the primary 7,009-foot runway, which has a weight capacity of 85,000 pounds, and grading and repaving several taxiways. Other enhancements include enlarging and strengthening the main ramp to accommodate larger aircraft, exterior lighting for T-hangars, periphery drainage improvements and installing high speed security gates at all entrances. "With more than 275,000 annual aircraft movements, we are one of the busiest non-commercial privately held airports in the U.S. serving business and general aviation customers as well as military DOD contract fueling," said Jag Gill, president. "Keeping the airport at optimum operating conditions for all our customers is our primary goal in making substantial commitments to capital improvements.” For more information, click here.

Oakdale Municipal Airport Requests Proposals for FBO

The City of Oakdale is seeking interested FBOs to support airport growth and traffic in a mutually advantageous partnership. The Oakdale Municipal Airport – Dan Donnelly Field features a 75 ft. wide by 3,020 ft. long runway, as well as upgraded taxiways with a number of commercial hangars available for long-term lease.
