Latest ATC Spinoff Proposal Meets Continued and Heavy Opposition from General Aviation Industry

Last week, six associations representing the general aviation industry issued a statement strongly opposing the Trump Administration for including in its government reorganization proposal a failed idea to privatize the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration’s (FAA) air traffic control services.

“There is a large and diverse chorus of opposition to the idea of privatizing our air traffic control system, including congressional leaders from both political parties, more than 100 aviation organizations, over 100 business leaders, 100 U.S. mayors, consumer and agricultural groups, conservative think tanks, and the majority of Americans. Additionally, this concept has been fully considered in the U.S. Congress and rejected despite years of repeated attempts,” stated NATA and the industry coalition.

Here is a complete list of 300 general aviation pilot organizations, state and local aviation officials, airports, manufacturers, labor unions, businesses, management associations and consumer groups that stand united against air traffic control privatization.

Avfuel and Gevo Partner to Promote Sustainable Alternative Jet Fuel Initiative

Last week, Avfuel announced a significant milestone in its sustainable fuels initiative, entering an agreement with leading next-generation biofuels company Gevo, Inc. Effective July 1, 2018. Avfuel will become Gevo’s exclusive aviation fuel distributor of renewable hydrocarbon products to business aviation and its entire portfolio of customers. Craig Sincock, Owner, President, and CEO of Avfuel, stated that the agreement will help the company meet the demand of its customers for a low-carbon, alternative jet fuel, filling a gap in the industry’s supply chain. Keith Sawyer, Avfuel’s Manager of Alternative Fuels assisted in the development of the recently launched Business Aviation Guide: To the Use of Sustainable Alternative Jet Fuel (SAJF). This guide serves as a helpful resource as the industry prepares to accept new fuel into its mainstream marketplace. Although the guide discusses the industry efforts to bring SAJF to market, the Avfuel-GEVO agreement furthers Avfuel’s efforts to promote a widespread commitment of emissions reduction. Earlier this month during NATA’s 2018 Annual Meeting and Aviation Business Conference, Avfuel presented on the SAJF initiative and participated on a panel about the future of environmental responsibility within the general aviation industry.

  Industry Updates

As Congress works to modernize our nation’s air traffic control system, lawmakers are looking at ways to improve the aviation technician shortage facing the industry. A bipartisan group of representatives and senators have introduced numerous pieces of legislation – in the form of standalone bills or as amendments to the House and Senate FAA reauthorization bills – to address the shortage by updating outdated training programs at aviation maintenance technical schools and establishing a pilot program to support the next generation of aviation maintenance technicians. NATA encourages you to act now by writing your representative and senators requesting their support of these important pieces of legislation that aim to grow the aviation maintenance technician workforce and promote collaboration with industry, businesses and local and federal governments to produce modernized curriculums that encourage the next generation of aviation technical workers and support thousands of future jobs across the country.

Help the FAA Provide Accurate Information on Aviation Activity and Safety

The 40th annual General Aviation and Part 135 Activity Survey (GA Survey) is underway! The FAA’s annual GA Survey is the only government source of information on the general aviation fleet, the number of hours flown and the ways people use general aviation aircraft. The data helps determine funding for infrastructure and service needs, assess the impact of regulatory changes and measure aviation safety. If you are selected to complete this year’s survey, you should have received a postcard invitation to participate. You can complete the survey online, or submit the survey form that was mailed to you in the enclosed postage-paid envelope. Your responses will be used for statistical purposes and will not be published or released in any form that would reveal an individual participant. If you have any questions, please contact survey manager Tetra Tech toll-free at 1-800-826-1797 or email infoaviationsurvey@tetratech.com. Previous years’ survey results can be found here.
